Who Writes My Blogs, Really?

I’ve been asked a few times recently whether I write my own blogs. One couple had a debate when one person said “These blogs sound so much like Sue,” and her partner asked whether I might use well-informed AI to write for me.

First, I have no judgment here. You do you. I like recent moves by writing and music platforms to identify likely AI assets, but I’m happy with all the experimenting you may be doing.

For my part, the answer is that I write everything I purport to write. I didn’t touch AI for my 2025 book Never Ask for the Sale, and I pen all my blogs (including this one) on my own.

Since I’m actually not sure whether my blogs would be better if I didn’t write them, I don’t take any big pride in this. When I read my last blog to my partner after it was published, we both thought it was way too long. I regretted not doing an AI sweep to tighten it up, but others disagreed, so who knows.

Here’s the why around this choice. I like writing. I like writing in ways that are unrefined and imperfect like this blog (and still I sweated the length, which is interesting to me). I wrote a blog a while back about trying to ensure I was less perfectionistic about these posts, and I think I’ve largely adhered to that intention (you surely agree on the sub-perfection point!). I work things out here. I share things with my people here. I try to distill lessons from my work here. The process of deciding when to write something and then writing it are edifying to me.

After I write a post, my business partner Liz reads and edits it lightly. She then uses AI to craft a short and snappy LinkedIn post to go with the blog. I review that too. And we’re off.

But the real reason I wrote this post is to share something Liz did that I loved. She used AI to look at my online presence and create a “Sue Style Guide” for use in the occasional instances where she does want to do a gut check to be sure something is written like I would want it written. I review almost everything she first crafts, but this gets her closer.

Honestly, I thought this was so brilliant, that I wanted to write this post to share this style guide. Here it is. What I love most is that she did it. Secondly, I love that this is not just a style guide for my writing, it is really a user guide for me. I could give this to someone looking at me as a conscious leadership coach, and they’d get a real feel for what it would be like to work with me. I did edit the document to add that I am funny and playful, a glaring omission and an indictment of AI’s underdeveloped sense of human humor. But otherwise it did a pretty great job of capturing how I show up, on the page and in real life.

Have you tried this for you? What writing are you doing yourself and outsourcing to AI? I showed you my style guide. Want to show us yours?
